What is the history of Anaheim, California?

The best way to learn how Anaheim became one of California’s gems is to understand the different stages this city went through:

1. The Native era

The first inhabitants of the area now known as Anaheim were Native Americans. More specifically, Tongva people inhabited the entire Southern California, and they’ve been here since around 3500 BC.

2. The Spanish era & the foundation

After the Spanish and Mexicans came to this area, they established a settlement in the 1800s. One of the most notable figures from this period is Juan Bautista Alvarado. He gave his compatriot Juan Pacifico a ranch grant, which set the stage for the intense development of the region.

However, it wasn’t the Spanish and Mexicans who officially founded Anaheim. Instead, it was established in 1857 by a few German-Americans who had resided in San Francisco. Their families had come to the U.S. from Bavaria, and after scouring the country to find fertile ground for grapes, they purchased a massive ranch from Juan Ontiveros. It was at this time that Anaheim became a major agricultural town.

3. 20th century

Anaheim maintained its position as the leading agricultural area in the West. Besides grapes, the settlers also grew oranges and many other fruits. The most prominent landowner in this era was Bennet Baxter, who had purchased most of northeast Anaheim.

Baxter had many creative ideas for growing orange plantations and eagerly shared his initiatives with fellow farmers. Thanks to the joint effort of Baxter and other landowners, Anaheim transformed into a thriving community.

4. Development of Disneyland

Let’s face it: the main reason you’ve chosen Anaheim as your next destination is that you want to take a closer look at the glorious Disneyland. That’s not to say there aren’t other fascinating places in this city, such as Knott’s Berry Park, but Disneyland is the crown jewel.

The construction of the park started in 1954, and the venue was opened a year later. As soon as it was launched, it became one of the biggest attractions in the world. Since its opening, the park has received nearly 800 million guests. Considering its off-the-charts popularity, it’s easy to see why many consider Disneyland the main contributor to Anaheim’s development as a major urban center.
